2nd place in the Red Bull Xalps

We think that the Red Bull Xalps is one of the hardest race in the world: from Salzburg (Austria) to Montecarlo, flying with a paraglider, or hiking night and day in order to finish first.
Congratulation to Christian Maurer, who broke all the records and finished in top place: a superb performance.
But Alex Hofer also had a great race, congratulations are due to him as well.

Alex Ploner, the new world champion in Hang Gliding

Our hang glider Laminar has won again the World Championships in Laragne, France. It's the fourth time, now with the young Italian pilot Alex.

The Laminar, piloted by Manfred Ruhmer, has already won 3 World Championships,
4 European Championships as well as the absolute distance world record at 701 km.

From Alex we received the following mail: Laveno was a fantastic competition, not just because I won, but above all because the conditions were those that you dream about all winter when thinking of hang gliding!! I am still thinking about the fantastic handling of my Z9; flying from cloud to cloud around Laveno with Manfred, Christian and the others was pure pleasure!! I have to thank Manfred in particular, because it was due to a small error on his part that I can now look at a memorable photo of the competition winners, me with two good friends, and in the order that I wanted! The German Open was also great. It was the first competition in which the pilots’ sprog and tip set-ups were monitored. There were no real surprises, and the Z9 performed brilliantly. In Germany we flew in rather weak conditions, and even though my 14.1 had a fairly high loading, it stayed up there very well indeed! In conclusion, the hang gliders are great, and we Laminar pilots have all the motivation we need, so see you at the World Championships!

After 5 years’ absence from hang gliding competitions, he scored another victory, in Bassano (Italy)
We asked Manfred to talk to us about his thoughts after winning the competition. This is what he said:
The flight time, including the time at the launch site before the start, felt rather long at three and a half hours. As I had been flying a hang glider again for just a few hours during the four days preceding the race, I felt rather tired! But in any case, I am very happy with the Laminar Z9 hang glider. Its behaviour in flight, considering its size (as always I flew the largest size, the 14.8) is truly remarkable, and the glide angle was also excellent. I felt at home in the thermals, just as in years gone by. Christian and the rest of the staff at Icaro have done a fantastic job over the last few years!
Five years on, returning to competitive hang gliding, and winning, was an extraordinary experience for me.
Now I am looking ahead to the world championships in Laragne. Motivation isn’t a problem, I have plenty of that!

welcome back at Icaro 2000
It is with great pleasure that we can announce Manfred Ruhmer’s return to competition hang gliding.
Manfred is by far the most successful competitive hang glider pilot of all time, multiple world champion, and holder of the world record for open distance in a hang glider. Manfred has decided that he will take part in the event at Bassano del Grappa, a cross-country classic held every year around Easter. The finest pilots in Europe and from all over the world will be competing on this occasion, in an event that Manfred has already won six consecutive times. There is no doubt that one of the factors inducing Manfred to take this important step is the new Z9 hang glider, with its state-of-the-art qualities and flight characteristics. Ruhmer was in fact directly involved in its development, and he played a decisive part in bringing it to its remarkable state of technological advancement. Alongside Manfred in the 2009 competition will be trusty stalwarts Christian Ciech and Alex Ploner, world champions in their own right (in the rigid wing category), and, in addition, other pilots of international repute.
With a team of this quality, Icaro2000 is beginning its 2009 competition season in the very best way possible. Best of luck, lads!

Manfred has recommenced working full time at our factory. His priorities are the development of the RX2 tandem and an electrically-powered trike, test-flying series production gliders, and, last but not least, his continuing sales and assistance work on Swift gliders.

About our Icaro 2000 Helmets

Sales of our helmets are enjoying a continuous growth trend. In fact, over the last two years, our sales have exceeded 6,000 helmets per year.
Increasingly, customers from other sports are using our lightweight helmets: base jumping, skateboarding, rollerblade skating, water skiing, long boarding, and many more besides.
So, we have decided to introduce a new registered trademark, featuring the name "4fight" which hallmarks our top models.
We have also created a new web page exclusively for our helmets: www.4fighthelmets.com By clicking any helmet link from the usual Icaro web site, you will be automatically redirected to the new pages.

In addition, this year we will introduce some new models, and further improve the quality of existing types.
We now offer 17 models, and three more will be introduced over the next few months.
To avoid confusion, we will give a single, short name to every model. For example, we have changed the name of the SkyRider Leather helmet to the new short name "Glam". On the page for each helmet, both the new and the old name will be shown.
