The sweet handling 13.7 gave me bags of confidence in the strong St Andre conditions and the glide was unsurpassed - what a glider!    See you soon at Laveno, Gary Results:  Chavlet Open   British Nationals July 2011 Alex Ploner first, Christian Ciech second at the 2011 Hang gliding World Championships at Monte Cucco, Italy Cross-country hang glider competitions entered the modern age in 1996, with the introduction of topless hang gliders and the use of GPS instruments to record flights. From that year, eight world championships have been held. The LAMINAR hang glider has won five of these! (For the record, the others were won, one each, by a Mouette, an Aeros and a Moyes). If we remember that the LAMINAR also holds the most prestigious record for this sector, that of overall distance (701 km recorded as long ago as 2001), there can be no doubts about the leadership position of Icaro2000 as a builder of winning hang gliders. More pictures on Picasa and Flafly Christian Ciech about the competititon: two tasks for a world title could be considered as insufficient, but it has to be said that they followed a competition season in which Icaro 2000 and its pilots have almost completely dominated the field. Alex Ploner's victory is well deserved. Personally I am happy with my second place, and above all I am very happy with our Laminar. We have worked all year on details and minor improvements that have made it unbeatable. With a few more days' flying, Manfred would undoubtedly have recouped the gap that separated him from the first three positions. The eighth place won by Brazilian Glauco Pinto is also exceptional, considering that this was his first competition in his national team. He also flew the Laminar. Let's look at the numbers: 2 Laminar gliders in first and second place, 4 Laminars in the first ten places, as opposed to 3 Aeros and 3 Moyes. Five flights, all very different. Conditions were good the first day, excellent on the second, very weak on the third, and then good on the last two days, though with extensive, almost excessive, cumulus cloud cover. The flight on the second day was fantastic. Very different from the usual flights for this competition. One hundred and twenty-seven kilometres, from Monte Grappa to Belluno, with goal at Barco di Levico. En route, the peaks of the Feltre range, and the southern face of Lagorai.  Lively conditions and cumulus clouds everywhere made it possible to achieve an average of 51 km/h. The views were amazing, with the Lagorai group still covered by snow. I think that this year’s competition will long remain a vivid memory for those who took part. For the first time, I succeeded in winning the competition with a flex-wing hang glider. I was very happy, surprised even, by the performance of my glider. I was able to modify and optimize flight characteristics for all conditions, whether strong, medium or weak lift. The consistency of results in the various tasks, in very different conditions, is convincing evidence of the glider’s versatility.  In addition, I was able to fly calmly and confidently. The fact that I was able to hold my own against a lot of very good pilots was very reassuring. Let’s hope it lasts!
