The V-Tail |

Description
Stratos is the latest innovation
rigid wings available on the market today. Thanks to this wing, Christian
Ciech won his first World Championship in 2002.
The new Icaro’s rigid wing is a direct evolution of the Atos, to which
have been applied significant improvements. The behaviour in thermals has
become more neutral and the glide performance is at the top of category.
Sail optimized cut reduces the drag and increase the performance. The new
sail cut gives also a nicer look to the wing (the graphic of this sail has
been designed by our graphic designer Ignazio Bernardi).
We also took particular care on all the finishing of the frame and sail.
Anyway, the primary target for Icaro 2000 is always the safety of its
wings. The Stratos is completely certified by DHV, in both the Standard
and Competition version.
However, in order to increase the safety of this Rigid wing, from 2003
onwards all Competition Stratos will come with the V-tail. This tail will
be available also as option on the Standard version and as upgrade kit on
all the rigid wings produced by Icaro till today.

Sail
The material used for the Stratos sail is a stormlight
of 2.1 Oz from the spinnacher's family. The Stratos is only available with
a white sail base and a large colour choice for the stripe. Thanks to our
long experience, in sail production, the design of the Stratos sail has
been completely carried out here, in Icaro 2000. Also the construction is
completely made in Icaro 2000; in this way we have a constant control on
the production quality. Final result is a sail without wrinkles, which
fits in a perfect way the wing profile.
Frame
The Stratos frame derives directly from the Atos frame;
it has been modified thanks to the experience gained in 5 years of
production activity. This choice permits Icaro 2000 to make use of Felix
Ruhle's well-known technological skills in composite, using the same
moulds for the D-cells and ribs, and guaranteeing the best possible
quality rigid wings on the market today.

Versions
The
Stratos is available in two versions. Standard and
Competition. The Standard version is made for pilots who want to fly with,
the wing that we describe as, the most comfortable and full performing
realized till today. With this wing, also non-competitor pilots are able
to reach their objective, of which, till now they could only dream about.
The
Competition
version is only for expert pilots, those looking for the absolute best
performing footlaunchable and pendular wing ever made. Any free flight
pilot, including World Champion of flex wings Manfred Ruhmer, can confirm
this reality. In spite of this incredible result, this wing is completly
certified by the German DHV.

V-Tail
Today, after a year of tests performed by the
A.I.R. team pilots, in and out of the competitions, the tail is finally
available for all the interested pilots. This tail has an asymmetric
profile and is placed on the keel with a fixed angle of attack. Thanks
to the single connection point it is very easy to fix and remove it.
This tail is expressly studied for the rigid wing and give the Stratos a
better longitudinal stability, increasing the piloting comfort and
consequently also the pitch handling. Also the directional stability
has increased and is it more difficult to lead the wing into a spin.
An interesting video
showing spins with and without the V-tail can be seen at:
www.dhv.de/deutsch/news/index.html. A report on the performance of the
V-tail during the 2002 World Championships at Chelan, Washington can be
accessed at www.davisstraub.com/OZ
