NeroHero helmet

Important news about the NeroHero helmet:

We are pleased to announce that our innovative helmet NeroHero is back on sale.
Its beautiful shape has been enhanced by a very cool tailpiece, a new protective component that completes the helmet's streamlined profile and prevents any accidental damage.
Another important new feature is the fact that NeroHero is now available in two versions with larger or smaller outer shell, for even better fit and comfort.
These changes are a demonstration of Icaro 2000's ongoing commitment to the improvement of our products' safety and performance, and the constant attention that we dedicate to our customers. We are sure that you will love NeroHero as much as we do.

Technical data (Index)

A helmet: art, science and technology

The NeroHero helmet was designed by Ignazio Bernardi, with technical consultancy from the most important helmet developer in Italy.
The creation of a new helmet is a lengthy process. It begins with a prototype made in wood and plaster, sculpted like a fine artwork with all the classic Italian artisanal talent.
Once this has been perfected, it is scanned to create a 3D file, which can be used for computer simulations, colour tests and detailed design. After further refinements, this file is then used to programme the CNC machines that cut the dies for the outer shell and the polystyrene lining.
This is just the start: the process continues with manufacturing, assembly, quality control, testing and packaging. The result is alluringly attractive and technically impeccable. In short, 100% Italian style.

Two outer shell sizes, in tough, light carbon

Design

As part of our ongoing commitment to user safety and comfort, we have introduced and certified a second carbon outer shell specifically for the largest sizes.
The smaller version is for sizes 53-59, and the larger version is for sizes 60 and 61.

What are the benefits of a full carbon shell?

Calotta

Carbon is the most prestigious material for a helmet's outer shell, lighter and offering a higher performance when compared to polycarbonate and fibreglass.
Carbon fibre offers optimum shell strength for greater safety particularly in high-speed impacts, and in fact NeroHero is a helmet constructed with the same technology as used in military applications.
The lower weight of the helmet reduces neck strain and whiplash potential and so also contributes to safety.
These tangible benefits are enhanced by the unique appearance of carbon that makes NeroHero a spectacular, eye-catching object, with no need for extra graphics: the beautiful fibre texture and its very cool colour make it attractive in itself.

Polystyrene

Polistirolo

In a helmet the inner shell in expanded polystyrene is fundamental for its shock-absorbing safety function, and in NeroHero this layer is very thick, enabling it to pass the demanding tests required for EN 966 certification.
These include the shock absorption tests, in which the deceleration is measured for impact with flat and kerbstone (corner) surfaces, and penetration tests with a pointed cone.
See below for more information on certification, with link to a video.

Visor

Visiera
Visiera

This helmet is always sold with a visor.
There are 3 visor colours available: transparent, tinted brown and mirror.
Please bear in mind that the mirror visor is particularly delicate.
All our visors are anti-fog, anti-scratch, and have full UV protection.
The visor’s damped closing system is precise and effective, an exclusive Icaro 2000 feature. It enables continuous adjustment, without fixed intermediate positions. In this way, during flight, the pilot can choose the degree of ventilation required: from an almost hermetic seal when it is completely closed, right through to completely open.

Visor fixing system

Visiera

The visor’s damped closing system is precise and effective, an exclusive Icaro 2000 feature. It enables continuous adjustment, without fixed intermediate positions.
In this way, during flight, the pilot can choose the degree of ventilation required: from an almost hermetic seal when it is completely closed, right through to completely open.
This fastening system is also essential to ensure that the aluminium disc does not project from the outer shell by more than 5 mm, ensuring that the paraglider lines cannot get caught on the helmet.
There is an O-ring inside the aluminium disc which provides the friction necessary to adjust visor position continuously and smoothly.

Sizes with interchangeable padding

Visiera

We have introduced a cap in the high-technology fabric Coolmax, which increases comfort by wicking perspiration away from the head and enabling it to evaporate rapidly, keeping you cool and dry.
Every NeroHero helmet has a label that guarantees the use of this famous new textile, which is also soft to touch and so makes the helmet even more comfortable.

The size of a helmet is specified by the comfort padding’s inner circumference.
The size number corresponds to the head circumference in centimetres, which you can determine using a soft measuring tape.

5 caps are available:

for the larger helmet, marked with a label:

for the smaller helmet, marked with a label: The cap is quick and easy to change for a better fit.
If the helmet is not a perfect fit, we can send you new padding free of charge, independently from where you bought the helmet.
Another important benefit of this internal padding system is that you can easily remove it and replace it with new padding, or simply wash it.

Airflow inside the helmet

Airflow

There are two small apertures at the front, and two at the back of the helmet, plus two large channels between the internal padding pieces. These features ensure good ventilation for the head inside the helmet.

Micrometric chin strap

The strong chin strap can easily be adjusted, with millimetric precision.
To release the strap, you just have to pull the red tab.
The strap is padded with soft, comfortable fabric.

A very cool tailpiece

We have added a new plastic protective component that completes the helmet's streamlined profile and prevents any accidental damage.

E.N. 966 certification

The video that illustrates the stringent tests necessary for our helmets’ EN 966 certification

Testing:
The NeroHero helmet was tested by the Italian laboratory CSI, a company authorized by the Italian Ministry of Transport.

This helmet was designed specifically for free flight pilots, in accordance with the respective European standard (EN 966).
But it is also ideal for land sports.

View the NeroHero EU TYPE EXAMINATION CERTIFICATE and the complete, very interesting test report for this full carbon helmet.

Our helmets were designed and built specifically to be as light as possible for paraglider and hang glider pilots. However, the optimization of safety is our primary priority. On pages 7 and 8, the test report shows that the impact measurements for the NeroHero helmet are far lower (and therefore safer) than the Max Peak Deceleration (-250 g) permitted.

For further information about the E.N. 966 test, please read our page About safety

Weights

Full carbon: 790 grams
The weight of a carbon helmet has a tolerance of +/- 50 grams, due to slight variations in the amount of resin applied to the layers of the shell.
Please remember that our first priority is to optimize safety, and then weight.

Italian-made quality

Interno

All our helmets are created by Italian designers, made in Italy using Italian materials and technology, assembled at our workshop in Laveno by trained Italian personnel, and certified by an Italian company.
It would be cheaper to outsource production overseas. We prefer to do everything ourselves, here in Italy, for a reason: quality, which means safety and user satisfaction. Our quality is not just a slogan: it is demonstrated by tangible results. Our hang gliders and helmets are used by leading pilots who have conquered an impressive list of world championship victories.
And you can see quality in action. You are welcome to visit our workshop and watch our team working on the helmets.

About that unusual name NeroHero

Name

It’s not always easy to find the right name for a product. It has to reflect its technical and visual characteristics, it has to be accessible to both Italian and international readers, and above all, it should reflect the approach of the company that makes it.
We wanted to call the helmet Bullet, but the name had been used for another flight product. We asked our friend and copywriter Henry Neuteboom to give us a hand. He suggested NeroHero, and we liked it straight away.
In fact, Henry works on all our texts, writing or correcting, and translating.
